Five Questions Before Selecting a Laser System

A practical procurement checklist covering material identity, part geometry, sample acceptance and proposal scope.

A useful equipment enquiry starts with a defined workpiece and a result that can be inspected. Answer these five questions before comparing model names or power labels.

1. What is the exact material?

Give the supplier product code or material specification. Include coatings, adhesives, protective films and any other layers. A photograph or a familiar colour is not a material identity.

Obtain relevant material documentation and have the equipment supplier assess the proposed process. Do not process an unidentified plastic to discover its composition. Trotec’s material restrictions identify examples that must not be treated as generic laser materials.

2. What has to fit, and how will it be held?

Measure the complete part and show the processing location. Include fixture, rotary or handling requirements. State which dimensions refer to the whole part and which refer to the intended working area.

Annotate a drawing or photograph if the relevant surface is recessed, curved or difficult to reach. A large nominal bed does not answer every access or positioning question.

3. What result are you asking for?

Separate a cut profile, an engraved surface and an identification mark. Describe the visible or measured result rather than relying on broad adjectives.

Instead of Describe
A clean engraving Visible face, artwork size and the appearance to compare
A durable mark Intended service and the inspection or durability criterion
A fast machine Representative part mix and the operations included in the quoted cycle

4. How will the sample be accepted?

Agree on representative material, artwork and criteria before the sample is made. Ask the evaluator to identify the material and configuration used. Keep returned evidence associated with that sample.

  • Actual material and surface layers
  • Representative fine detail and positioning
  • Agreed appearance or measurement
  • Clear record of included operations

5. What belongs in the complete proposal?

Request the proposed configuration, stated exclusions and installation requirements. Clarify handling, training, support and the acceptance basis for the actual equipment.

Commercial terms, compliance documentation and performance evidence must describe the offered machine. The concepts shown on this teaching site are not production specifications.

Put the five answers into one brief

Use the same inputs for every supplier. This makes differences in proposed scope easier to see and reduces repeated clarification.

Material identity, part geometry, intended result, sample acceptance and proposal scope are five connected decisions—not five independent specifications.
